The union advantage

Unions offer members (and their families) improved job security and safety, higher wages, important healthcare and pension benefits and a voice in their workplace.  We call this the "union advantage".  Look at the details of this advantage to see what it means to the Union worker (and, if you are a non-union worker, to see what you are missing):

Improve your job security
Earn more as a Union member
Obtain better healthcare coverage
Get a better pension plan

And if these reasons aren't enough to convince you that you're missing something outside of a Union, consider the many other benefits of membership in a Union.

For more details on the specific benefits that many Union members enjoy, see a list of benefits from some growing, progressive Unions.

Improve your job security
Why would workers in a non-union workplace want a Union? This is a question that is on the minds of working men and women everywhere, no matter what occupation. The fact is that having a Union in your workplace is the most beneficial thing you can do to secure your future and the future of your family!

Did you know that if you work in a non-union workplace you could be fired for virtually any reason (including no reason)? Did you know that in a non-union workplace, you could be fired for getting sick, or for getting injured on the job? Did you know that, in a non-union workplace, you could be laid off to make room for friends or relatives of your employer?

But if you worked in a Unionized workplace, your job would be protected whether you were sick or injured, and you would be protected by a Union contract during layoffs. In a Unionized workplace layoffs usually go by seniority.

Earn more as a Union member
Employees in a Union workplace earn far more in wages than non-union workers. Unionized workers have Union contracts that guarantee certain wages and benefits for the Union worker for the life of the contract.

In 1999, The U.S. Department of Labor reported that Union workers earned an average of $640.00 per week, compared to the earnings of non-union workers, who averaged $478.00 per week.

The average Union worker earns 34% more in wages that non-union workers. And in some occupations, Union workers earn as much as 74% more than the non-union worker.

Since Unionized Laborers earn 34% more in wages than non-union workers, you can quickly see what a Union can do for you and your family!

Obtain better healthcare
A Union can help those in the workplace obtain better healthcare for you and your family.

In Union workplaces, 52% of all Union workers have family medical coverage that is fully paid by the employer. By contrast, in non-union workplaces, only 18% of workers have fully paid insurance coverage.

In Union workplaces, 49% of all Union workers have dental insurance fully paid by the employer. In non-union workplaces, only 19% of workers have dental insurance that is fully paid by the employer.

Unions have a long history of obtaining healthcare coverage as a critical employee benefit. Specifically, our Union has been at the forefront in negotiating broad, fully paid insurance coverage for the members and families of members.  As a member, you would have the  Union working together with you to secure better insurance coverage for you and your family.

Most Union contracts provide for good quality insurance coverage. This means that Unionized workers can concentrate on providing for their families in other ways since their Union has negotiated quality insurance coverage for their families.

There are 40 million Americans who have no insurance coverage and the majority of those 40 million are children of employed workers. With a Union contract, these workers and their families would be covered.

Unions have always worked aggressively to provide quality healthcare for its members and their families. Let a Union negotiate your family's insurance coverage. Become a Union member. You and your family will benefit.

Get a better pension plan
Union representation means that you are better able to retire with financial security for you and your spouse. There is a tremendous advantage to having a Union negotiate pension benefits for you and your future.

Of all Union workers, 81% have Defined Benefit Pension Plans that are fully financed by the employer. Defined Benefit Pension Plans are guaranteed by the Government and they provide a guaranteed monthly pension amount.

In non-union workplaces, only 48% of workers have Defined Benefit Pension Plans financed by the employer.

Many Unions also negotiate insurance coverage into their contracts for retirees and their spouses. This significantly eases the burden of illness and medical costs for the retired Union worker and their spouse.
