How a union works

As a member of a Union, you are the Union.

You and your co-workers will have your own Local Union where you will:

  • nominate and elect your own Local Union officers from among your co-workers within your Local Union (usually every three years)
  • make all decisions in your Local Union by a democratic vote
  • decide on your needs for your contract -- you will elect your own negotiating committee to negotiate your contract.

Your International Union will assign one or more International Union Representatives (also called "service officers") to help you in:

  • Contract Negotiations
  • Grievances
  • Arbitration Hearings
  • Other matters that your Local Union and its members need assistance with.

As a member of a Union, you are the Union.
